After lunch today I entered the room to find Jessica and Sabrina having a discussion about a dead bug on the window ledge.
Sabrina ‘Don’t touch it, it is a spider and spiders bite when they are dead’
Jessica ‘It’s not a spider. It looks like a dragon, it has wings and stripes’
Sabrina ‘It has 8 legs, so it’s a spider.’
Jessica ‘No! It’s a dragon fly look at the picture.’ Jessica led Sabrina and Taylor around to a picture of a dragonfly on a reading box, they attempted to count the legs and then ran back to have a look at the bug.
At this point in the discussion I had the children explain to me what was going on and we sat down to talk about what we knew about insects and spiders.
Jessica ‘They look the same, We could see who thinks it’s a dragonfly and who thinks it’s a spider.’
Taylor ‘I think it’s a dragonfly because it has 5 legs like on the
dragonfly box’
Sabrina had another look and tried counting the legs on the dead fly again and then conceded that it might be a dragon fly rather than a spider. The conversation of what they knew about insects and spider continued.
Sabrina I saw flies at my house , I put a flower on the window to make them go away.
